It has been over an year since my first time in Bangkok, Thailand. First flight. First suppy. First "I have no idea what I am doing" feeling as cabin crew.
Bangkok can be an amazing city, but it is very easy to get tired of all the traffic, pollution and lack of organization. I personally love it. Its a life time experience. However as a very populated city expect to share your personal space with almost 8 million of people (not counting the tourists) while you visit Thai's capital. During your stay make sure you treat yourself with the amazing local food. Warning for the fish sauce that it is present in almost every dish (I particularly don't like it, but give it a try). Go wild and get fat.
For now forget all the fancy shoes and clothes that you sacredly keep in your closet, Bangkok is a place for jeans, shorts, light skirts and dresses. Bring your sunglasses and your backpack and I will guide you around.
Bangkok has a lot to offer. However, most of the must see places are still buddhist temples.
Rent a taxi or take the boat, either way you can easily get to the Grand Palace or Wat Phra Kaew. Keep in mind that these are sacred places, shoulders and legs must be covered. But do not panic, in case you are a shorts' lover, all these places have skirts and shirts for you under deposit.
It will take around 2 to 3 hours to visit the Palace.
The tuc-tuc ride is a must try. Its also a life threatening experience. Keep it short.
City tips:
#1 Always carry water and sunscreen with you. This city is hot and humid and you will have the feeling you are leaving in a sauna.
#2 Taxi is still the easy way to get around, however I tried the metro and boat and seemed very good alternatives. When renting a taxi be aware of the prices. Try to choose the ones with meter or make sure you negotiate the price before the ride.
#3 English is still not widely spoken. Ask someone from the hotel to translate for you any information. Maps with icons are always a good help.
